Para conocer los bienes y servicios que produce la vegetación urbana me gustaría realizar un pequeño ejercicio. Imaginar una calle arbolada cerca de vuestro hogar y un momento después la misma calle pero sin un solo árbol. ¿Cuáles son las diferencias?
Dependen de la calle en cuestión que hayáis imaginado. Puede que el arbolado viario estuviese en mal estado o mal seleccionado y su eliminación produjese un mayor beneficio social. Pero en una gran mayoría de los casos una calle arbolada es percibida con mayor agrado que una calle desarbolada. ¿Por qué?
Para responder a esta pregunta es necesario establecer el significado de este elemento singular en el ecosistema urbano y a continuación, analizar los costes y beneficios que producen al mismo.
La dimensión más fácil de interpretar en los árboles es la estética. El arbolado en general tiene un fuerte efecto relajante sobre las personas. Los árboles además son considerados representaciones simbólicas, tanto en el ámbito cívico como en el religioso. Es muy fácil identificarse con estos seres vivos, sus formas nos recuerdan a siluetas humanas, incluso en nuestra vida cotidiana utilizamos términos como nuestras “raíces” y nuestro “árbol familiar”. En cuanto al simbolismo religioso, no recuerdo ninguna religión que no tenga al árbol como un importante componente teológico. Desde el manzano de Adán y Eva hasta la higuera de Siddhartha. Una posible explicación de la conexión hombre-árbol podría ser su origen, y es que nuestros remotos antepasados homínidos vivían en sabanas y bosques sabaneros en África. Resaltar por último que nuestra relación con los árboles no ha sido siempre cordial, durante la Edad Media hubo temor al bosque, este se asociaba con oscuridad, enemigos, brujas, lobos…
Una vez sintetizado la importancia social, cultural e histórica de los árboles es hora de enumerar las funciones de estos componentes bióticos dentro de las ciudades.
El arbolado urbano puede que tenga un balance positivo si hablamos de servicios ecológicos. Por un lado mejora el microclima urbano (regula la temperatura, humedad, calidad del aire…), pero también genera polen (alergias) o produce una gran cantidad de residuos orgánicos. La revalorización de “lo verde” en cualquier ámbito de nuestra sociedad hace patente la función socioeconómica del arbolado: una urbanización con árboles en su viario y un buen parque urbano es mucho más atractiva que otra que no presenta estos servicios. A estos servicios ambientales y socioeconómicos se le puede sumar una función sanitaria, ya que la salud y psicología de las personas están estrechamente ligadas con el entorno inmediato.
